Spyderco's new Matriarch2 Emerson Opener combines extreme cutting power with the deployment capability of the Emerson Opening device. The result is an exceptional folding knife that is ideal for utility and personal defense use.

The Matriarch2 traces its lineage to one of Spyderco's oldest and most unique designs: the C12 Civilian. Developed in response to a request from a U.S. federal law enforcement agency, the Civilian was designed as a knife for undercover narcotics officers operating without carrying a firearm. It featured a sinuous Reverse "S" edge profile that replicates the mechanics of a claw to generate extreme cutting force.

In the late 1990's, Spyderco combined the Civilian's revolutionary blade design with the fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) handle of the popular Endura model to create the Matriarch and, in 2012, the Matriarch2. The new Matriarch2 Emerson Opener continues this evolution.

The blade of the Matriarch2 is hollow ground from VG-10 stainless steel and features the signature Reverse "S" edge profile of the classic Civilian. Above the trademark Spyderco Round Hole it features a small integral hook known as an Emerson Opener. Developed and patented by renowned custom knifemaker Ernest Emerson, this unique device hooks on the edge of the pocket as the knife is drawn, automatically opening the blade as the knife clears the pocket.

To ensure a secure grip, the Matriarch2 features an injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon handle with Bi-Directional Texturing™. Skeletonized stainless steel liners and a sturdy back lock mechanism guarantee structural strength, while screw-together construction and phosphor-bronze pivot washers ensure maximum precision and smooth operation.

Texan, Gayle Bradley started making custom knives in 1988, then joined The American Knifemakers Guild and began producing handmade folders and fixed-blades. Since 2002 he has been a fulltime knifemaker. Once customers discovered his blades, his reputation mushroomed and he was tagged as a knifemaker who focused on building exceptional knives for hard-use, with the finest materials and time-proven construction techniques.

Shortly after becoming a full-time maker, Gayle won a World Cutting Competition expanding his reputation further. He claimed his title using a fixed-blade that plowed through wood, water bottles and eleven-inches of hanging hemp rope. Bradley knives are known as not simply fingernail cleaners or cutlery bling, but as some of the best down-on-the-ground – getting gritty and dirty blades. His first collaboration with a production company we're glad to say, was with Spyderco. His C134 Gayle Bradley Folder symbolized his reputational forte; anteing up a hard-use folder designed for tough work.

His second Spyderco collaboration the C159GFP Air, took on a unique flair with an unexpected touch of gentrification. The Air successfully combines Gayle's penchant for hard-use blades into a smaller gent's-type folder. As Gayle Bradley's knifemaking style continues to evolve, Spyderco will be collaborating with him and offering unique and tough specialty cutlery.
